The Great Westerners

What is a Western movie? What inspired the genre? When were western movies created?

Western movies entail men called cowboys, whom ride on horses and fire at each other with pistols or rifles. A back story is revealed about the main characters (a good guy and a bad guy). A plot kept the audience engaged. For example: A plan to save a woman from bad men or prevent a robbery. Inspiration came from real events that occurred in the past that involved these types of men who looked and acted just like the characters in the movies. “No genre was more important to Hollywood than the Western” (Thomas Schatz). The Western Genre created awareness of issues that our Country faced. The first Western Movie was created in 1903 by Edwin S. Porter who created “Great Train Robbery.”
