Addicted to Power

We humans are influenced by our emotions and if we feel stressed, threatened, or scared. Our body’s natural reaction is to seek out opportunities or activities that will promote our body’s release of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is released and can create a feeling of reward and excitement or pleasure. It is our body’s form of a defense mechanism in order to get the body out of a threatened or scared state back into a more controlled and relaxed state. Often times, we can become addicted to the release of dopamine, causing us to make unhealthy choices in order to repeat this sense of high and reward again. Some ways that one might release dopamine are through risk taking and emotional detachment that can cause ruthless behavior and in return, causing feelings of strength and power.

In the new movie X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Jean Grey, becomes addicted to her evolving cosmic powers and spirals out of control when her ultimate threat is to destroy mutants, human existence, and the entire planet.
